History Bowie State University is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts university founded in 1868 as the Baltimore Normal School under the auspices of the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of Colored People. From 1868 to 1988, the school’s name changed several times to Maryland Normal and Industrial School at Bowie in 1914; Maryland State Teachers College at Bowie in 1935; Maryland State Teachers College in 1951; Bowie State College in 1963; and Bowie State University in 1988. In 1893, the school changed its focus from a grade and normal school to a teacher-training school for blacks. After receiving state funding status, the school moved from a three-story brick building to a 338.5-acre tract in Prince George’s County, with funds bequeathed for the education of freed “Negro” children from black philanthropist Nelson Wells. Bowie State serves as one of Maryland’s four regional comprehensive universities.
